Humiliated and offended
Original title: Humillados y ofendidos
Synopsis
In this story, the drive towards self-denial in love, which appears so sharply in both Vanya and Natasha, is not enough to lead their lives; instead, it is combined with their social world and the worldly ambitions of Prince Valkovsky to defeat their hope for happiness. Of all the characters of the novel, only Natasha's lover, Prince Alyosha's son, the least motivated person to shape life on his own terms, emerges intact.
Here are, to a greater extent than in the more familiar works of Dostoievski, people of flesh and blood as we see them every day. They are composed of both good and evil, will and acceptance. They unfathomably arouse interest and enlighten understanding.
