King Henry the Sixth
Original title: King Henry the Sixth
Synopsis
If in writing Richard II, Shakespeare went beyond the avatars of the political game and inquired about the human condition of the king and the behavior of men, in Henry IV not only went further along this path, but also incorporated for the first time a decisive ingredient of comedy into the historical drama. On a few occasions Shakespeare put forward so clearly the relationship between fun and obligation, humanity and authority, achieving an abundance of contrasts and a wealth of emotions that would no longer appear in this genre. The incorporation of this comic world with scenes of tavern and popular life focuses on the figure of Falstaff, one of the most extraordinary creations of the author and one of those characters of universal literature that get out of the page. The two parts of Henry IV belong to Shakespeare's second tetralogy of English historical dramas (which begins with Richard II and ends with Henry V).
